“Throughout his more than 40 years in the public relations industry, Steve has gone above and beyond to give back to the profession and embetter his local community,” said Joe Cohen, APR, 2014 PRSA National Chair. “As public relations professionals we should strive to help others as Steve has done for so many years.”
The award is named in honor of the late Paul M. Lund, vice president of Public Relations and Employee Communications of AT&T in the early 1970s. Lund was not only an accomplished leader in public relations, but was also a leader in every community of which he was a part, demonstrating an extraordinary commitment to public service. The Paul M. Lund Public Service Award is given to a PRSA member whose participation as a volunteer in important public activities has increased the common good and reflected credit on the Society.
“When the call came to me about this award, I was humbled and honored; humbled because of Mr. Lund’s legacy of public service and honored that my colleagues here in Tulsa would consider me worthy of the nomination,” said Turnbo. “Service to others should be a hallmark for all of us. Nothing feels better than giving back.”
Turnbo currently serves as chairman emeritus of Schnake Turnbo Frank, Inc. He began his career as the sports information director at The University of Tulsa in the late 1960's before joining one of Oklahoma's largest advertising agencies where he served as a public relations account executive and later as vice president. In 1980, he formed Schnake Turnbo, merging with Chuck Schnake in 1982. Turnbo was a partner in the firm for more than 25 years before being named chairman emeritus.
Turnbo presently serves as president of the Will Rogers Memorial Foundation, board member of the John Hope Franklin Memorial Commission, board member of the Oklahoma Conference for Community and Justice and board of trustees member for the University of Tulsa.
