PRSA Chair-elect Comments on Corporate Disclosure in Fort Wayne Journal-Gazette

PRSA Chair-elect Gerard F. Corbett, APR, Fellow PRSA, was quoted in the Fort Wayne (Ind.) Journal-Gazette in a May 15, 2011, article regarding how businesses can best communicate layoffs to their employees, the public and stakeholders.

Regarding the problems that often arise when companies try to secretly implement layoffs, Corbett noted the following:

"When you’re secret, you leave it up to people’s imaginations to fill in the blanks. And that can be dangerous.

“Enlightened companies don’t try to hide the process [of workforce reductions]. There’s a much greater damage factor when you try to hide the process. We see it time and again. Employers will manipulate the system so they can avoid any bad publicity. Any company that tries to skirt the issue [of massive job cuts] is, I think, playing a dangerous reputation game.”
