PRSA Announces Resignation of William M. Murray

Launches National Search to Identify New Chief Executive Officer
NEW YORK (Mar. 7, 2014) — The Public Relations Society of America (PRSA), the largest professional organization serving the U.S. public relations community, announced today that William M. Murray has resigned as its chief executive officer.  During his more than seven years with PRSA, Murray played an integral role in helping to drive forward an extended period of structural growth for the organization. 

“During his long tenure with PRSA, Bill has done an excellent job in providing leadership for our organization,” said Joe Cohen, APR, PRSA Chair.  “He helped instill a bottom-line business sensibility within the organization, while never losing sight of our focus on serving our members and advancing the profession.  We are deeply appreciative of Bill’s significant contributions to PRSA and wish him the very best in the next stage of his career.”
PRSA is conducting a national search led by its Executive Committee of the Board of Directors to identify a new chief executive officer.  The new CEO will be tasked to help guide the organization to capitalize upon the opportunities created within the fast-growing PR sector.
Murray, who will leave PRSA to pursue a new leadership opportunity outside the communications profession, will remain on staff through June 1 and will assist in the transition process and help manage PRSA operations during this period. 
“It has been an honor and privilege to serve PRSA during a critical period for the organization and for the profession. PRSA now stands at the threshold of an exciting new chapter and is well-positioned to thrive and grow in the years ahead,” said Murray.  “After deep reflection, I’ve decided that the time has come for me to leave PRSA and pursue new opportunities and new challenges. It has been a tremendous pleasure to serve the Society as part of the dedicated team of staff, volunteers, and leaders who are committed to advancing the profession of public relations – many of whom I consider friends.”
During his time at PRSA, Murray helped guide the organization to deliver financial results that met or exceeded goals set by the board of directors, while supervising the addition of a wide variety of programs and member benefits, including “The Business Case for Public Relations,” free webinars for members, and a redesigned advocacy program focusing on ethics, diversity and the value that public relations brings to organizations.
During his tenure at PRSA, Murray was honored as the Outstanding Association Executive of the Year (2009) by the New York Society of Association Executives, and was awarded his Certified Association Executive credential, a distinction held by only 5% of association executives.
