PRSA Foundation to Honor Mike Fernandez with 2016 Paladin Award

NEW YORK, NY (April 5, 2016) - The PRSA Foundation has named Mike Fernandez, Corporate Vice President, Corporate Affairs at Cargill, Inc. as its 2016 Paladin Honoree. The award will be presented at the Foundation’s upcoming annual Paladin Awards Reception on Thursday, April 21 at the Helen Mills Event Space in New York City.

“The Paladin Award Ceremony honors ‘Paladins,’ public relations industry leaders who inspire change in our profession,” said Torod Neptune, Foundation president. “Mike’s body of work, throughout his career, embodies the spirit of the paladin, an advocate of a noble cause in medieval times, and we are thrilled to recognize his many contributions to our field.”

Fernandez leads Cargill’s global corporate affairs activities, including government relations, global issues management, corporate communications, brand and marketing services, and corporate social responsibility. Fernandez is listed on PRWeek’s Power List of the top 50 PR professionals in the U.S. and the Holmes Report’s Influence 100 list of the top 100 PR professionals in the world. He serves on the boards of the Institute for Public Relations and the Arthur W. Page Society, and has received numerous honors, including the first Hispanic Public Relations Association National Pioneer of the Year Award, as well as the Alexander Hamilton Medal for Lifetime Contribution to the field of public relations.

Fernandez will be the eighth public relations “paladin.” Previous recipients of the award include Charlotte Otto, Harris Diamond, Dan Edelman, Harold Burson, Jon Iwata, Marcia Silverman and John Graham.

Co-chairs of this year’s reception are Andy Polansky, CEO of Weber Shandwick, and Kim Hunter, Founder and CEO of The LAGRANT Foundation. Host Committee Members for the event include Verizon, The LAGRANT Foundation, Burson-Marsteller and Waste Management. Several hundred public relations leaders are expected to attend the event.

Proceeds from the Paladin Award Ceremony support the initiatives of the PRSA Foundation, whose mission is to attract and support a diverse range of ambitious and promising students to the public relations profession. The Foundation does that in many ways, including through partnerships with organizations that include the United Negro College Fund, the Arthur W. Page Society, the PR Council, the Plank Center and major universities.
