PRSA Chair Discusses Rutgers University’s Recent PR Crisis

In an April 4, 2013 op-ed in Ragan’s PR Daily, PRSA chair and CEO Mickey Nall discusses the recent firing of Rutgers men’s basketball coach Mike Rice.
Nall explains that while firing Rice was the only remaining course of action, slapping a “PR Band Aid” on the issue isn’t going to resolve the severe damage that has already been done. There was an unstoppable flow of criticism targeted at the university and the coach after a video was leaked showing Rice shoving, grabbing and throwing balls at his players. The coach was also caught on video making homophobic and misogynistic slurs at his players.
Firing Rice at this point doesn’t offer Rutgers a moment of relief because of how long it took the university to address this matter. By not taking immediate action when the video first surfaced, Nall says the university is likely to face an even greater negative impact on its reputation.
